£300 reward to catch the graffiti bandit

You may have seen some of the graffiti around Mile End on Turner Rise, Turner Road and North Station where around 26 different incidents of graffiti were recorded on various bus shelters, fences, houses and bins.

Most of this has now been cleaned up but wastes taxpayers money in having to carry out such an extension clean-up when resources could be spent on more valuable community projects.

Cllr’s Martin Goss and David King have offered a £200 reward for information leading to the apprehension and prosecution of the culprit. A local resident has also offered a further £100 bringing the total to £300.

Cleaning up graffiti and litter in Mile End

Martin Goss carries a graffiti cleaning kit in his car so when local graffiti is easy
enough to remove with graffiti wipes he will jump into action to clean up our area quickly.

Martin said “It is proven if we remove graffiti within hours of it being sprayed it can be demotivating to the “tagger.” If it gets left it is considered a badge of honour and gives the “artist” something to brag about.

During lockdown and more recently there has been issues over the increase in litter being dropped around the ward. Dropping litter is an offence and can incur a Fixed Penalty Notice of £100. We have requested fines are increased to £150.

Our thanks to our Neighbourhoods team and all those residents who have undertaken litter picks or picked up litter on their walks.

Also thanks to our existing and new Litter Warriors who have volunteered to do regular litter picks. If you or your family would like to become Litter Warriors please let one of us know and we will provide you with the equipment.

Phil Coleman, David King and Martin Goss each get £2000 to spend on projects in Mile End. In previous years we have funded tree planting, new benches and also purchased play equipment for the local Primary Schools in our area.

Electing a new Councillor on May 3rd 2018

On May 3^rd you have the chance to elect a new Councillor for Mile End as Dominic Graham is retiring after representing Mile End for the last 4 years.

David King has been working as part of our team for the last year and has been a great asset rolling his sleeves up and getting heavily involved in the Mile End workload.

During the last year he has personally responded to the hundreds of Mile End resident surveys we have received after we have knocked on every door and ensured everyone in Mile End has had a chance to have your say.

He has also spoken to many resident’s face to face on the door and followed up the many issues highlighted in your responses, from potholes, parking issues and facilities to holding developers to account.
He has cleared snow from the pathways of many local residents, has picked the litter and worked at the environmental concerns of residents.
He supports the rest of the team in our work to improve Mile End. This will soon include new outdoor play equipment for the Mile End playing fields.

David lives in Mile End with his family and has a long history of being active in the local community not only as a Community Councillor but as Chair of Governors for various schools in the area. David is, like us, totally against pointless tit for tat with other political parties and for a positive approach to the issues. He is part of a collective team only interested in putting Mile End first. Our regular newsletters delivered all year round will always be full of Mile End information and updates. We hope that you find them useful.

Mile End Locality budgets

New trees for Mile End to be planted in our open spaces
Sports equipment for local Primary schools
Bulb planting in two locations in Mile End
Sports equipment for children’s holiday camps at First Site
A bench on Mill Road by the gym equipment
Contribution to the “Community First Responders”
Contribution to homeless charities Beacon House and Colchester Night Shelter
Sports kit for a football club

David King said “This is a great investment in many worthwhile causes either in our local community or in organisations that help support Mile End residents.”

Reporting crime in Mile End

Colchester’s new Chief Inspector Shaun Kane will be introducing new initiatives to stamp out low-level crime.

When asked by Cllr Coleman at a recent Scrutiny meeting about the non emergency number 101 he made it clear that ALL crimes should be reported.

All reported crimes are recorded and whilst police resources are limited these reports will create a picture of what action is needed in areas of the borough. He made it clear that it was his priority to make communities safe and will be deploying officers where they are needed based on community feedback.

Please report all crimes such as AntiSocial Behaviour, dangerous parking, theft etc on 101.

Turner Road repaired

We are pleased to say that repairs have been made to the worst parts of Turner Road following escalation by County Cllr Anne Turrell.

The road had some serious issues where repairs were falling apart within weeks and sinking into the road. There has been structural scanning undertaken along the road and it appears there have been some subsiding issues which hopefully the new repairs will take care of.

We will watch closely the latest repairs to the road and how well they perform.

Mile End Highway updates

Turner Road sinking

As you may have seen Turner Road is sinking in places and each time road repairs are undertaken by Essex County Council (ECC) they simply fail. Following our complaints ECC have now agreed to undertake an investigation to find the cause of the issues and implement a long term solution. We will update you once we have further details.

Bakers Lane & Bergholt Road

Essex County Council have confirmed that Bakers Lane will undergo some partial resurfacing this financial year (2016/17) and we are awaiting to see if Bergholt Road has made it to the list.

Mile End Road cycle lane

You may have noticed work starting on the £750,000 Mile End Road cycle lane by Essex County Council. To be clear, we have objected to this project when we first found out about it and have supported a formal complaint made by the Colchester Cycling campaigners as they don’t support the project either.

We have asked ECC to replace all trees which have been removed and also suggested places where further trees should be put in along Mile End Road. The pinch point at the bottom of Mile End Road is also not yet resolved and we are pushing for ECC to share the designs for this area.

Northfields Resident meeting

A meeting was chaired by Cllr Martin Goss in January with Trinity Estates for all residents to attend of the Northfields development off Turner Road. Many issues affecting the development were discussed which included Satellite system reliability, parking and estate completion.

We are working closely with Trinity Estates and Linden Homes to ensure the actions agreed are carried out.
