Parking issues in Mile End

With the General Hospital, main line station and a professional football club in the ward there are challenges with parking.

We meet regularly with the hospital estate managers who assure us they want to be good neighbours and are looking at travel plans for their employees to stop parking on nearby residential areas.

We have been contacted by residents on a number of developments asking for restrictions to be put in place. For this to happen the road or area would need support from 75% of residents before the plan could go forward to North Essex Parking Partnership for consideration.

We are happy to facilitate this but to date most residents do not favour restrictions. We would ask that drivers park considerately and any poor or dangerous parking is reported.

Dangerous parking or blocking the path can be reported to police on 101, all other issues can be reported to NEEP on 01206 282316.

Mile End Secondary Schools update!

Schools update – the new FIGHT for residents. We fought for new schools and facilities. We said new homes must come with infrastructure – and on time. We were promised they would but Essex County Council planners have failed us all with school delays and a lack of school places in north Colchester. Now we must fight to reduce the delay and disruption.

We will INSIST that County commit to the new secondary school being here for 2021/22. We will demand that they make every effort to MINIMISE the travel for any child who cannot be placed locally, like at the Gilberd and that they provide help with transport for those facing a long journey. And we will make this personal – we will tell the County Council what is needed. We will ask that they write and explain. And we will get the County Education boss to come and LISTEN to you.

Anne Turrell is our lead. She has already emailed or visited over a dozen residents and will help others as they need. But, we will also get out to you our best advice – our ‘What to Do’ key points if you appeal against a school placement.

Phil Coleman said “As a teacher of over 20 years I’ve seen first hand how the decentralization and in-effect privatization of Education via Academies now leads to community wrecking situations like this where their own admission criteria can be set.

Sending children on two bus journeys to the other side of town in simply not acceptable. We need Government to fund the school now, not tell us we have enough school places across the town completely ignoring local community needs.”

Speeding issues

ACTION has been taken in response to YOUR
complaints over speeding, including in Northern
Approach Road, Axial Way, Bergholt Road and
Apprentice Drive. The police have limited
resources and must prioritise where they are
deployed.

It helps us all if you continue to report concerns
on 101 and let us know of issues as they arise.
But the GOOD NEWS – the Community Policing
team have responded to us, have visited and
have taken enforcement action. We will ask for
more if needed!

Chesterwell planning application amendment affecting Mile End Road

We want to ensure you are aware of a modification request for the planning conditions set on the original Mersea Homes planning application for the Chesterwell development.

Bartholomew Court which is currently a dead end was always designed to be a bus access only route for the Chesterwell development which would access onto Mile End Road. Mersea Homes have submitted a change to this so the route can also be used by traffic from up to 160 houses on the southern end of the Chesterwell development.

The bus route would still use this access point and it also means access to the 160 houses would also be from this access point too.

We have said to Mersea Homes they must install electronic rising bollards for the bus access point so that it cannot be accessed by the majority of the Chesterwell development traffic should this change be approved.

Delivering for all in Mile End

Your Mile End Councillors know they are here to serve. They value their strong roots in the community and the support and loyalty residents choose to show at election time. This is not taken for granted. Working hard matters. Getting results even more. Recent campaigns include parking and yellow lines surveys and action. Recent successes include securing Crest Nicholson action on long standing problems with doors and windows in Rosewood and action against HGV access through Three Crowns Road, action on residential issues in Chesterwell and getting the best out of finishing works for Northfields. In the weeks ahead there will be more local issues and interests to serve. Action on buses. Improved visibility and presence for the police. Wider work on the Council towards great facilities for all at the Northern Gateway. More to come and the same promise – here to serve.

Phil Coleman, David King and Martin Goss each get £2000 to spend on projects in Mile End. In previous years we have funded tree planting, new benches and also purchased play equipment for the local Primary Schools in our area.

Electing a new Councillor on May 3rd 2018

On May 3^rd you have the chance to elect a new Councillor for Mile End as Dominic Graham is retiring after representing Mile End for the last 4 years.

David King has been working as part of our team for the last year and has been a great asset rolling his sleeves up and getting heavily involved in the Mile End workload.

During the last year he has personally responded to the hundreds of Mile End resident surveys we have received after we have knocked on every door and ensured everyone in Mile End has had a chance to have your say.

He has also spoken to many resident’s face to face on the door and followed up the many issues highlighted in your responses, from potholes, parking issues and facilities to holding developers to account.
He has cleared snow from the pathways of many local residents, has picked the litter and worked at the environmental concerns of residents.
He supports the rest of the team in our work to improve Mile End. This will soon include new outdoor play equipment for the Mile End playing fields.

David lives in Mile End with his family and has a long history of being active in the local community not only as a Community Councillor but as Chair of Governors for various schools in the area. David is, like us, totally against pointless tit for tat with other political parties and for a positive approach to the issues. He is part of a collective team only interested in putting Mile End first. Our regular newsletters delivered all year round will always be full of Mile End information and updates. We hope that you find them useful.

Mile End Locality budgets

Each Councillor gets £2,000 to spend in their area.

We have invested in the following:

New trees for Mile End to be planted in our open spaces
Sports equipment for local Primary schools
Bulb planting in two locations in Mile End
Sports equipment for children’s holiday camps at First Site
A bench on Mill Road by the gym equipment
Contribution to the “Community First Responders”
Contribution to homeless charities Beacon House and Colchester Night Shelter
Sports kit for a football club

David King said “This is a great investment in many worthwhile causes either in our local community or in organisations that help support Mile End residents.”

Nayland Road bus gate camera

Essex County Council are adding a bus gate camera that will definitely be in operation so fines can be levied on anyone who drives through the gate either way. It will go into operation in November 2017.

It is worth being aware of this as Essex County Council will pursue anyone who uses this entrance.

A bus lane camera was recently added to the lane outside the Norfolk Pub in North Station Road and fines have since been issues.

We don’t want to see anyone receive a fine.

Reporting crime in Mile End

Colchester’s new Chief Inspector Shaun Kane will be introducing new initiatives to stamp out low-level crime.

When asked by Cllr Coleman at a recent Scrutiny meeting about the non emergency number 101 he made it clear that ALL crimes should be reported.

All reported crimes are recorded and whilst police resources are limited these reports will create a picture of what action is needed in areas of the borough. He made it clear that it was his priority to make communities safe and will be deploying officers where they are needed based on community feedback.

Please report all crimes such as AntiSocial Behaviour, dangerous parking, theft etc on 101.
